What is the purpose of a table lamp and floor lamps?

By purpose i mean like what is does, how the way it should be used effects the height it should be made at. (for both table and floor lamps)

so for example is it that a table lamp shouldn't be very tall as they are only used to see certain areas whereas a floor lamp is much higher because the light needs to spread out across further. - Is that right?

How do you suggest i should write it? What is the purpose of a table lamp and floor lamps?
A table lamp is there to provide local lighting, sometimes for ambience like a generic decorative lamp but usually to help visually acuity in doing an activity, such as writing, reading or drawing. As they only need to illuminate the immediate area they do not need to be big and only really need to be carefully designed around the reflector to ensure the light diffuses correctly for the purpose.

Tall lamps are more usually designed for ambient lighting. Hence their form is more important, as these types usually have very open reflectors/shades to help diffuse softer, less focused light over a greater spread.

Hope that helpsWhat is the purpose of a table lamp and floor lamps?
A table lamp should not be too tall as it is mainly to supply light for reading. The proportions, materials and colours it's made from should fit with the rest of the furniture in the room. Bedside lamps are often shorter still, sometimes used with a shade with a diffuser - if you're lying down or reading in bed, you don't want to be blinded by seeing a bare lightbulb.

Floor lamps are used to light up more of the room, although the shade design and wattage of lightbulb can render the light more atmospheric, rather than with the function of a primary light source.
Table lamps have a purpose. They supply light to the area that you are sitting to read, watch TV or can just light up the room. The height and look should complement the size of your furniture. Most floor lamps in my opinion are more for looks as they can look nice up really don't supply a lot of light unless you use a 250 watt bulb. The light shoots upward giving a higher area lighting but won't work for reading or real comfort. I have stayed away from table lamps these past few years but changed my mind last night. I have a family room/kitchen. The fan lights did not illuminate the kitchen area enough to allow me to change the overhead lighting. So now I just hope when I get home tonight there is enough natural light to change them.
Table lamps and floor lamps are area lighting. A table lamp should not be so tall that when you sit, you see the lightbulb.

A floor lamp is used to spread light upwards. A table lamp is used as accent lighting.

Write it how you want to... I imagine this is for your homework...
well a table lamp needs to be short so the light is concentrated more on the table and so it doesn't shine in your eyes when you're sitting at the table and a floor light needs to throw light over the whole room to light it up =]

a table lamp is for use when there is a table present. Floor lamp are use when there is no furniture to put a lamp on. Both can also be used just for their own aesthetic values.
Usually it's extra lighting for reading or just a decorative accent.
I think their height varies just for decoration, and space convenience.
Just area lighting for each member of the family or looks.....high low..for reading.......or whatever you heart desires. Instead of lighting the whole room.......your just high lighting areas
I think the height is there because a desk lamp needs to be short, space availability..
Yes. They are also used to add different levels of light to a room.
