How do you use the table of contents generator in MS word?

I need to use the table of contents generator for my report and I have never used it before. After you go to Insert, Reference and select Tables the box will pop up. I don't know what to do next I have tried to play with it but it says that there will be an outline toolbar I can click and drop text into. I can't find it! Table of Contents generator will generate a TOC only if you have marked your Headings correctly using ';Styles and Formatting';. It'll then take your headers and create the TOC off of that.How do you use the table of contents generator in MS word?
