How do I keep my dog off the coffee table?

I have a 7 month old shitzu, and he's been jumping on the coffee table and destroying napkins, rolls of paper towels, and whatever else that's left on it. Been trying to just bring him over to it and say no, and saying no whenever he destroys something, but it doesn't seem to be working. Just looking for a few ideas to train him.How do I keep my dog off the coffee table?
Bringing him over to the coffee table and saying no will not work. You have to catch him in the act if you are going to tell him no.

Dogs are like cameras. When you say ';no'; or ';good boy';, they take a snapshot of what is going on at the time for better or worse and remember that.

A 7 month old puppy should have a high level of supervision especially when it is destructive. I would suggest crating your puppy when you can't give 100% attention and keeping a drag line (leash without a hand loop) on your puppy when he is loose in the house so you have something to grab when he goes to do something dangerous or destuctive. Gating can be helpful as well to keep a puppy in the area you will be supervising. How do I keep my dog off the coffee table?
Keep a flyswatter handy. The first time your pet gets too close to the coffee table, swat your shitzu with it: don't beat your friend to death with it. And from the first time you convincingly swat your friend with the flyswatter, keep it handy and use the flyswatter to control your pet. After a while, just threatening your pet with the flyswatter will be all that is necessary.

Whenever my dachsunds will not stop barking, I hit the side of their carrier with it. And even our dachsund Baby, who would make the problem child commit suicide, is afraid of the flyswatter. And it has worked well for the over 50 dogs -- in our families history, hundreds of cats -- in our families history, a dozen grandkids, all four kids, and one husband that my Mom trained with the flyswatter.

Mom was not brutal with her flyswatter, she was in control with it.
Can't you just keep these things off the coffee table? Whenever he jumps up there and chews something, he's being rewarded for that action. If your table is kept completely bare, at least for a while, it will lose the attraction and he will have no incentive for jumping up there.

Also make sure he has plenty of his own toys and plenty of exercise.
Whenever he jumps on the coffee table, spray him with a water bottle. Just one spray but make sure he see's the bottle, so whenever he does something wrong, show him the bottle sometimes that is the same thing as spraying him. Good luck!
